Your Business Is A Video Game. Can You Beat These 4 Levels?
Everyone starts their business thinking, "This should be relatively straightforward."
Then reality hits. You realize you're in a video game with no tutorial, no extra lives, and an impossible boss (yourself).
Well, you're playing the game now. Might as well try to win it.
After running my business for over a decade, and coaching hundreds of entrepreneurs, I can confidently say:
There's levels to this shit.
4 levels, in fact. With a hidden trap waiting for you at each one. The good news is, you get paid gold coins every time you level up.
Level 1: Confidence
Revenue: $0-$1k
Your mission for this level is to prove that you can get paid for your skills and expertise. You just need your first few clients. But it's not as easy as it sounds.
The trap on this level is called Creative Avoidance. You get more certifications, tweak your website, and never actually put yourself out there. You convince yourself that you're making progress. But really, you're just hiding because you're afraid of rejection.
You can beat this level only by having conversations with people who can say Yes or No to what you offer. Confidence is a result of taking action, not a pre-requisite for it. Once you make your first $1k, you're on to Level 2.
Level 2: Clarity
Revenue: $1k-$5k/m
Your mission for this level is to figure out what your business is. You've gotten some traction, but you often feel like you're spinning your wheels. You're trying different niches and marketing strategies but nothing has fully clicked yet. There's foundational work to be done.
The trap on this level is Endless Experimentation. You keep testing new things, hoping one of them will feel obviously right. But at some point, clarity comes from making a decision. Deciding who you'll serve, what problem you want to be known for, and how you're going to solve it. Most coaches stay here way too long because commitment feels risky.
You beat this level not by finding the perfect niche, but by choosing one that works and going all in. Once you've validated your decision by generating $5k/m on average, you're on to Level 3.
Level 3: Consistency
Revenue: $5k/m-$25k/m
You've proven you can get clients. The problem is that it still feels like feast and famine - some months are great, others make you wonder if it was all a fluke. Your mission for this level is to build a business that generates consistent leads, clients, and income.
The trap on this level is what I call Death By A Million Offers. You have a slow month, panic, launch something new, and cash comes in. Maybe you get excited about creating a course. But every time you add something new, you add complexity to your business. The scrappiness that got you here won't get you to the predictability you want because you can't track or refine any of what you're doing.
The answer is to do less. Stick to one offer, one avatar, and one repeatable way to get in front of them. That's it. Don't go back to Level 2. Keep simplifying, filling your roster, and raising your rates until you hit $25k/m. Then you either chill there with a nice lifestyle business or keep going.
Level 4: Capacity
Revenue: $25k+/m
Your mission for this level is to scale without everything depending on you. You've got a business that works. The problem is that you are the business - and there are only so many hours in the day.
The trap on this level is called Founder Dependency. You keep taking on more clients, more calls, and more admin. At some point, your calendar can't hold it all. You're at the limit of what you can charge. And the math simply doesn't math: you can't make more money because you can't take on more clients.
You can beat this level, but you need leverage. A more scaleable offer, a full-time admin or operations person, and better systems. These allow the business to grow without requiring more of your time. Stop thinking of yourself as the one actively building your business and start thinking of yourself as the architect of it all.
Ready to move up a level?
Most entrepreneurs stay stuck on a single level for years because they're out of sequence. For example, they're following Level 4 advice (build an automated funnel) when they're on Level 2 (get clear on your niche).
This is so common because we all want to be further along than we are. But there are no cheat codes in business. The only cheat code is to stop looking for a cheat code and just finish the level you're on.
If you're in Level 3 or 4 and want help scaling your business, that's exactly what I do. Every month I work 1-1 with a small number of coaches and consultants to help them build a more predictable, profitable business without working more hours.
